Radio interferometric measurements have shown that narrow jets transport matter at high velocities from the nuclei of Cygnus A, Pictor A and other radio galaxies. A collisionless shock and hotspot is formed when such jets impact the intergalactic medium. Chandra X-ray observations of the hotspots of Cygnus A and Pictor A have recently been reported. In this paper we discuss the production of magnetic fields and particle acceleration in jets and hotspots. We compare the Cygnus A measurements with those of Pictor A.
