Freja is a joint Swedish and German scientific satellite launched on 6 Oct 1992 to acquire high-resolution measurements of plasmas, fields, and ultraviolet emissions associated with auroral phenomena. The magnetic field experiment incorporates a ring-core fluxgate sensor and an Forth reduced instruction set computer microprocessor. This programmable microprocessor has significant advantages. The Freja mission enables real-time data display on a laptop-sized computer linked to the ground receiving station. This PC-telephone link also provides the real-time means to send commands to Freja to change instrument modes and even to reprogram the entire processor. The details of this unique instrument and satellite mission and some uses of its real-time data capabilities are described.
