The processes involved in magnetospheric substorms and, by implication, other astrophysical conditions presumed to be the result of a sudden conversion of magnetic energy are considered. The solar wind-magnetospheric energy coupling function, magnetic energy density in the magnetotail and AE substorm index as determined by the Explorer 34 and 35 satellites and auroral zone magnetic observatories, respectively, are shown to vary roughly in harmony, implying that the development of magnetospheric substorms is a direct consequence of increasing solar wind-magnetospheric energy coupling and solar wind-magnetospheric dynamo power, and not the explosive conversion of stored magnetic energy. Consequences of the increased dynamo power would include the intensification of field-aligned currents, leading to the generation of auroras and the auroral electrojet. It is also pointed out that, as in the case of an auroral substorm, a solar flare could be a direct result of a photospheric dynamo process.
