It is shown that the magnetic interaction between a protostar and the ambient molecular gas out of which it formed can lead to rapid generation of magnetic energy in the neighborhood of the protostar, resulting in the formation of a 'magnetic bubble' which expands, driving before it a shock wave and a shell of swept-up ambient gas. Comparison is made between the predicted properties of these magnetic bubbles and the characteristics of observed molecular outflows, and it is seen that magnetic bubbles provide an attractive explanation for the high velocity outflows which have been observed near young stellar objects. In particular, it is shown that the outflow in the BN/KL region of OMC-1 may be due to such a bubble.
