The scope of the experiment is the investigation of the onset and the flow pattern of magnetic Bénard convection. This is a form of convection where the interaction between a density gradient and gravity, familiar from the ground-based Bénard convection [1,2], is replaced by a similar interplay between a magnetic force and a magnetizationgradient in a magnetic fluid. The investigations are carried out in drop tower and sounding rocket experiments with a suspension of small magnetite particles (a so called ferrofluid). The ferrofluid is enclosed between two concentric cylinders heated from the axis and cooled at the outer surface. Magnetic convection was observed during a sounding rocket flight and two drop tower experiments. The flow profiles obtained can be compared with theoretical predictions.
