Lars Borg (University of New Mexico) and Michael Drake (University of Arizona) synthesized available age data for Martian meteorites. Cosmochemists have determined when a variety of Martian igneous rocks crystallized and when their original minerals were altered by interaction with water. Igneous events occurred soon after the planet formed 4500 million years ago and continued to about 174 million years ago. Water affected the planet beginning within 100 million years of solar system formation and continued to less than 170 million years ago, perhaps to now. These observations tie in reasonably well with what we know from photogeologic studies of Mars, but we need more quantitative age determinations, implying sophisticated in situ age measurements and sample return missions.
