The Magellan planetary probe mission is to map the surface of Venus through the dense atmosphere by means of SAR imaging. The SAR camera will produce contiguous images of at least 70 percent of the planetary surface, with a resolution of 360 m or better. The radar antenna will be employed as a radiometer to passively sense heat emissions and surface brightness temperatures. Altimetry data will be returned by a rectangular horn-shaped antenna adjacent to the radar antenna, measuring surface feature heights to within 30 m. Unique data-compression techniques will be used to improve image resolution.
