The ESA Magellan project, designed to provide high resolution spectra (greater than 25,000) between 500 and 1500A of galactic and extragalactic objects with V 16 M, is outlined. The instrument consists of a mechanical collimator, a concave holographic grating and a bidimensional photon counting detector. A low resolution mode provides spectra of objects as faint as 18.5 M. Magellan is planned as an observatory, operated in real time, and allowing interaction with the observer.
