It is important to test M-theory in regions of the moduli space that cannot be reached by string theory and thus to probe M-theory's intrinsic structure. One such test is the compactification of M-theory on manifolds with SU(5) holonomy, which require ten Euclidean-signature dimensions and hence probe beyond anything that can be discussed in perturbative string theory. We present some preliminary results of ongoing work that is focused on studying the resulting one-dimensional effective action.
