It is in the deepest sorrow that we have to announce the untimely death 01 Prof. M. K. V. Bappu, Director of the Indian Institute 01 Astrophysics, Bangalore, and President 01 the International Astronomical Union. He passed away in Munieh, on Augusl19, 1982, during a visit to ESO, following complications after major heart surgery. An obituary will follow in lhe next issue 01 the Messenger.
