M9 is a globular cluster in the constellation of Ophiuchus (3 degrees south and 2 degrees east from η Ophiuchi), only 5500 light years from the Galactic Center. It has a visual brightness of 7.3 mag which is partly because of its great distance from the Sun (26 000 light-years) but also because it lies at the edge of a dark nebula and is hence dimmed by dust to the north and west.
