Open Clusters And Associations: Individual: Lynga 7, Galaxy: Halo, Galaxy: Evolution
Scientific paper
Lyngå 7 is a richly populated Southern Hemisphere star cluster originally cataloged as an open cluster. Its location in the Milky Way and inferences about its age and composition from a recent photometric study pose interesting questions about its origin and membership in the cluster populations (Ortolani et al. [A&A, 273, 415 (1993)]. Ortolani et al. `s analysis of Lyngå 7's color magnitude diagram (CMD) derives an age that is "significantly younger than the classical halo clusters but older than the old open clusters" (Ortolani et al. 1993), which raises the possibility Lyngå 7 is a young globular cluster or the oldest open cluster known to date. To shed light upon Lyngå 7 s membership in the cluster population, we have obtained moderate resolution CCD spectra with the CTIO 4 m. From our spectroscopic study, we have derived a mean radial velocity for the cluster of 6±15 km s-1 and a mean metallicity of -0.62±0.15 dex. We discuss improved determinations of the reddening to the cluster and derive a new distance modulus based on our measurements. We compare Lyngå 7 s properties to the various cluster populations, and conclude that its location, kinematics, and metallicity are most consistent with membership in the disk globular cluster population.
