The author shows that Lyman line pumping (Hoang-Binh, 1983) reduces the maser action in radio recombination lines emitted by H II regions. This effect is equivalent to an increase of the electron density Ne without increasing the electron impact broadening. In the modelling of H II regions by means of radio line data, the variation of the parameter Ne could be significantly influenced by this pump mechanism.
