Using hydrodynamic cosmological simulations, we predict the correlations between Lya forest absorption in quasars and the presence of galaxies close to the line of sight. The predicted correlations on large scales are in qualitative agreement with observations, but the observations show decreased absorption in very close proximity to galaxies, which the simulations do not predict. We find that local photoionization by galaxies or the AGN within them cannot explain this observed decrease, and that any feedback mechanism must eliminate neutral hydrogen out to comoving distances of ~ 1 Mpc/h or more to reproduce the observations.
