Observations of the fluorescent Lyman alpha emission from Lyman limit systems, or the Lyman alpha cooling radiation of structure formation itself would go a long way toward addressing important outstanding questions such as how galaxies get their gas, the nature of Lyman limit systems, and a measurement of the UV background. Such observations, however, push the limits of what is possible with modern large telescopes and accurate predictions of these emission signatures are necessary in order to interpret current observations and plan future surveys. Using a radiative transfer technique to propagate Lyman alpha radiation in concert with cosmological SPH simulations, I make predictions for the Lyman alpha emission from Lyman limit systems and galaxies in formation in a Lambda-CDM universe.
