The scientific objectives and instruments of the proposed Lyman observatory are examined. The observatory is to provide high-resolution spectroscopy in the 900-1200 A region and medium-resolution spectroscopy over selected spectral bands between 100-2000 A. Temperature, density, and chemical abundance data for various plasmas, active galactic nuclei, and the solar system are to be obtained during the spectral studies to be conducted at the observatory. The requirements for and capabilities of the observatory's Wolter-Schwarzchild type II telescope, prime spectrograph, and EUV spectrograph are described.
