We compare Lyman α emission from star-forming galaxies in the local Universe and at z=2.4, using Voyager 2 UVS data for M33 and HST observations in the 53W002 cluster at z=2.4. Hα comparison data at high redshift are presented from the IRTF with tunable narrow-band filter. M33 shows Lyman α emission with global equivalent width 60 Å, and a Lyα/Hα ratio near 1.5. The one-dimensional spatial profile shows that the Lyman emission does not come from the giant HII region NGC 604, from which we suggest that the diffuse interstellar medium may be the immediate source of most of the Lyman α emission in such galaxies. Our current limits at high redshift show Lyα/Hα>3 for star-forming objects. We briefly consider what kinds of local objects we should compare to the compact, blue emission-line objects found at high redshift.
