Variations in nickel contents of small grains (less than 10 microns in diameter) of a metallic phase in anorthositic breccia are caused by chemical reaction of metallic liquid with a molten mafic silicate liquid rind, an intermediate partially melted zone, and the anorthosite host. The quench nature of the texture of this rock has frozen various steps of contamination of the host anorthosite at its outer margin, whose identity would have been lost if the reactions had gone to completion. Based on the present data, it is concluded that it is invalid to assign provenance to lunar metallic phases solely on the basis of composition. Some of the metal in the breccia may have been of meteoritic origin, some from the melting process, and some from subsolidus heating of anorthosite.
