The en echelon and en echelon within en echelon patterns formed by lunar mare ridges and ridge ranges are discussed. The appearance and development of second-order synthetic, opposite and antithetic Reidel shear fractures in addition to the tension gashes or compression ridges comprising the en echelon structures are discussed, and it is pointed out that minor en echelon structures may be formed within major Reidel shears. The ridges appearing in the southwest Oceanus Procellarum area which are characterized by en echelon patterns consisting of major mares ridge ranges with dextral and sinistral en echelon arrangements along the northwest-southeast and northeast-southwest zones, respectively, are examined, and it is found that each major mare ridge range can be seen as consisting of a subsystem of individual mare ridges with minor en echelon arrangements of their own. These en echelon within en echelon structures are then used to intrepret lunar crustal deformations within the mare areas as indicating both the complicated post-peak phase synthetic Reidel and tension gashes of strike-slip movements along major shear zones. The arrangements are also shown to be more compatible with north-south than with east-west compression models.
