Observations of the lunar eclipse of October 17, 1986 are used to attempt to explain variations in lunar surface brightness and color during eclipse. The features of the earth's shadow during the eclipse are described, and the effects of the earth's atmospheric conditions on the eclipse characteristics are addressed. The colors and brightness of the moon during different eclipse stages are examined and discussed.
