VV 114 is a luminous infrared system made up of two interacting galaxies. We have observed the warm interstellar medium in this system at high resolution using the Submillimeter Array. The main results of our study show that contrary to the previous studies, we detect 3 peaks of CO emission in this interacting system, whereas the CO J=1-0 studies indicated only two: one at the each nuclei. Our new, higher resolution observations of the higher-J transitions of CO show that there is a large concentration of warm gas at the interaction region of the two seen in the CO J=6-5 and J=3-2 maps which is not as prominent in the lower-J maps. The CO J=3-2 and J=2-1 gas dynamics are very similar and seem to be suggestive of an expanding edge-on ring of gas that encompasses the two nuclei and the overlap region. Despite the similarity in gas dynamics, we see that the the 13CO/12CO J=2-1 and CO J=3-2/J=2-1 line ratios vary spatially around the ring, suggesting the presence of temperature and density gradients in the ISM, likely the result of heating caused by the collision-triggered star formation activity.
