The author obtains a luminosity function (LF) for E and S0 galaxies from a new sample of 248 southern galaxies (Sadler 1984). He finds that the parameters describing this LF in the Schechter form are M* = -21.7 and α = -1.35 (H0 = 50). In his computations the author takes into account the inhomogeneity of galaxy distribution which is large and changes considerably the shape of LF. The incompleteness of the sample and the infall on to the Virgo supercluster are also taken into consideration.
