The function developed by Schechter (1976) to describe the distribution of absolute luminosities is employed to derive formulas for the single-object-counting tests N(m) and N(z) used in verifying cosmological models. Numerical calculations are performed using commonly accepted values of various constants and the observational data of Jarvis and Tyson (1981) to demonstrate both the usefulness of the method and the need for further observations (especially counts of objects of redshift up to specific value). The characteristic absolute galactic magnitude and mean extragalactic absorption are estimated as -20.05 mag and 0.0004 mag/Mpc, respectively.
