Starting in 2012, the LSST 3.2 giga-pixel camera will produce 20 terabytes of raw image data per night, plus several terabytes of processed images and catalog-data, reaching a multi-petabyte range within the first year. The sheer volume of data, the real-time nature of LSST, and its spatio-temporal aspects require cutting-edge techniques to build a reliable and easy-to-use system at reasonable cost. Both technical and operational requirements imply a multi-tiered architecture in which data is replicated for reliability and performance at several centers. Data management is further complicated by the requirement that all data be immediately made public with easy and quick query access to a wide range of users. As a solution, data will be published using Virtual Observatory protocols and services, allowing broad public access and enabling astronomers to cross-correlate LSST data with data from other instruments and telescopes. This poster describes the LSST requirements, the challenges they impose, and the data access philosophy and architecture that is expected to be adopted in order to meet these challenges.
