From experimental data concerning thermal solar tides, it is shown that
they account for the average diurnal variations of the 557.7-nm atomic
oxygen nightglow intensity at 100-km altitude for different latitudes.
It is pointed out that this result can be applied to the average diurnal
variation of emissions of other constituents, such as Na, OH, O2.
