The wave model of Bingham et al. (1984) for the formation of discrete auroras, where the electrons are stochastically heated by the lower hybrid (LH) waves present in the auroral zone, is extended to include ion heating. It is proposed that the LH waves are responsible for the generation of hydrogen ion-cyclotron (HIC) turbulence by parametric coupling between the high-frequency motion of LH waves and the low-frequency motion of HIC waves. The LH wave electric field can generate daughter waves and an accompanying low-frequency HIC wave. The threshold for this parametric instability is shown to be sufficiently small so that the observed intensity of the pump wave vector can excite the low-frequency waves, which subsequently transfer energy to the ions by stochastic acceleration. This process is more efficient that the direct heating of ions by the pump itself.
