The fabrication and testing are described of a heterodyne SIS receiver for quasi-optical radioastronomical applications that uses an open-structure SIS mixer with an immersion lens. The device employs a Gaussian-beam two-lens-input guide system within a quasi-optical structure comprising a planar equiangular spiral antenna and an SIS tunnel junction. The SIS tunnel junction is utilized as a mixing element connected to the antenna by means of a microstrip impedance transformer. The receiver is tested and shown to perform well, although LO power reflections are noted to which the SIS mixer is highly sensitive. The mixer noise temperature is found to be as low as 8 +/- 6 K at room temperature for an input of 109.8 GHz LO frequency. The mixer noise-temperature measurement is less accurate due to the power reflections, and a 70-mm focus lens is introduced to solve the problems of beam focusing and reflection.
