Hst Proposal Id #5353 Cool Stars Faint Companions

Scientific paper

We propose to conduct a SNAPSHOT survey of late-type M-dwarf (Mv > +12) members of the Hyades cluster. Our aim is to use the unparalleled resolution of Space Telescope to determine the fraction of binary/multiple systems amongst this complete, proper-motion selected sample. These observations, by concentrating on the lower-luminosity stars, offer the prospect of detecting cool, sub-stellar mass brown dwarfs, particularly given the relative youth of the Hyades. Based on Henry and McCarthy's survey of the 28 M-dwarf systems with 5.2 parsecs of the Sun, we expect an overall binary fraction of approximately 30 percent, of which more than half are expected to have major axes of at least 5 a.u. (0.1 arcsecond at the distance of the Hyades). We have tailored our exposure times to give 10,000 counts/pixel in the (potential) primary and we expect to be able to identify companions up to 5 magnitudes faint - corresponding to M(I) = 13.5 to 16.5.
