We present approximate spectral types, obtained from objective-prism plates of 1 360 Å/mm at Hγ, and UBV photographic photometry of Hα-emission objects in the Coalsack region. Nearly all the objects were selected from published lists, but half a dozen were found by ourselves. Our results enable us to recognize different kinds of objects from those lists. For the early OB stars we obtain approximate color excesses and distance moduli that suggest that the bulk of them lie at the same distance as the Cent OB1 association ; quite a few of the OB stars lie even farther away, beyond 5 kpc from the Sun.
