An active region model constructed from an ensemble of simple loops placed in a dipole magnetic structure is examined. It is demonstrated that the emission pattern produced by the model region depends sensitively on the assumed heating function. Emission patterns were calculated for six heating functions. All the models with realistic emission patterns had heating functions with an inverse dependence on loop volume. The two best studied heating theories, resonant electrodynamic heating and topological dissipation, both have an inverse volume dependence. Heating theories without such dependence can be rejected.
