It is suggested that the various forms of the outburst activity observed in cataclysmic variables can be interpreted as the more or less alternating phases of the more general outburst activity cycle which repeats many times during the secular evolution of these systems. A crucial role in determining the properties of a particular cycle is played by the energetics, speed class, recurrence time, and heating and cooling time of the classical nova outburst at the beginning and at the end of this cycle. Importance of the recurrent nova T Pyx and a possible significant role of magnetic fields in the evolution of the cataclysmic outburst activity are stressed. Computer codes devoted to the study of the long-term evolution of outburst activity in cataclysmics are described.
