The long-term relation between solar and geomagnetic activity is a topic of intense research and it is not very well understood at present. This paper presents a novel methodology based on mutual information to show the long-term relationship between solar and geomagnetic activity for long-term prediction. In this paper, the evolution of the correlation and lag of Aa and Rz annual average series is studied and compared with solar wind speed data and DAE indices, in order to assess the physical mechanisms responsible by the differences in the long-term variation of geomagnetic and solar activity correlation.
