Long-term UBVR photoelectric photometry of the symbiotic nova V1016 Cyg performed from 1971 to 2000 is presented. The archive photographic plates were used to estimate the brightness of the object during the years 1895-1910 and 1937-1997. These data together with the post-outburst visual observations from international databases are discussed. The pre-outburst brightening in 1949, main nova-like outburst in 1964 and two small brightenings in 1980 and 1994 suggest a 5500-day periodicity of activity, interpreted as the orbital period of the binary. In 1971, during the brightness maximum of the symbiotic nova, the outbursting white dwarf mimicked a B6 supergiant.
