A summary is presented of the results of 22 months of observations (from February, 1979 - December, 1980) of VHF Arctic mesosphere echoes with the 50-MHz mesosphere-stratosphere-troposphere radars at Poker Flat, Alaska (65.13 deg N, 146.46 deg W, geographic). Mesospheric echo heights obtained during this time show a pronounced seasonal variation in height. From mid-May to mid-August, echoes occur in the height range of 80 to 100 km, whereas in the other seasons, they range from about 55 to 80 km, with transitions to and from the higher summertime heights occurring abruptly in May and September. The summer echoes are relatively continuous in time, while lower-altitude (non-summer) echoes are observed primarily during daytime hours when energetic auroral particle precipitation is present. It is concluded that the VHF mesospheric echoes arise from intense neutral turbulence operating on a vertical gradient of electron density, and the seasonal variation of the echo height is most likely an indication of the variation of height of the most intense turbulence, which appears to arise from a nonlocal source and could well arise from the turbulent breakdown of tropospherically generated waves (Lindzen, 1980).
