Consideration is given to the growth rates required in the extent, size and cost of the space infrastructure if it is to have a sufficient capacity to overcome terrestrial limits to economic growth. The growth rates required from the current space infrastructure are established. The required rate of growth is found to significantly exceed current levels. It is suggested that at best mankind has less than a decade to reorient the development of space capability to ensure the successful transition from a terrestrial into a solar system wide civilization.
