We aim to characterize the near-IR variability of a sample of stars contained in the molecular cloud rho Ophiuchus. This is accomplished through the photometric study of 1678 sources overs a temporal baseline of 2.5 years. The J, H and Ks photometry was obtained through the 2MASS Calibration Point Source Working Database. We implement a novel period-searching algorithm to identify periodic behavior within the sample. From the above sample, we determine 117 variable sources from which we have accurate periods for 38 sources. We have additionally estimated timescales for long duration photometric variations for another 35 sources. We identify four targets of interest for future monitoring and characterization. WL 4 and YLW 16A exhibit photometric periods of 65.61 ± 0.40 and 92.28 ± 0.84 days, respectively. We propose the observed variations are due to misaligned circumstellar disks periodically obscuring one of the binary components. YLW 16C demonstrates two distinct periods, 5.7752 ± 0.0085 and 5.9514 ± 0.0015 days. This could represent a star in the process of tidal locking to it's disk. WL 15 has a clear sinusoidal period of 19.412 ± 0.085 days. It also has a single clear eclipse event of 1 mag, possibly due to an obscuring cloud not associated with the system. We will soon submit for publication a catalog of these variables. Funding for the principal author provided through the IPAC Fellowship program.
