The accuracy, altitude registration and precision of ozone measurements at the tropics by variety of space borne instruments, SAGE 2, HALOE, ODIN-SMR and ENVISAT-GOMOS, have been investigated by comparison with a large number of profiles derived from solar occultation measurements by UV-Visible spectrometry from long duration balloon flights at the Southern Tropics. The satellite data, including that of GOMOS, are found generally very consistent within 2-5% with that of the balloons above 20-22 km, but that of ODIN-SMR significantly noisier (20%). However, the precision of all instruments degrades rapidly below 20 km in the Tropopause Tropical Layer and the Upper Troposphere where the variability of the retrieved concentrations exceeds significantly that of the balloons and the ozonesondes, suggesting important measurements or retrievals errors at these levels. Similar measurements of NO2 have been collected in the morning and the evening to which that of the satellite instruments will be compared in the future.
