The results of a search for emission from the 9(09)-8(08) transition and the degenerate 9(37)-8(36) and 9(36)-8(35) transitions of 1-cyanobut-3-ene-1-yne (H3C5N) toward the cold cloud TMC1, the warm cloud G35.2-0.74, and the carbon star IRC + 10216, performed using a cooled parametric amplifier and a 128-channel digital autocorrelation receiver (split into two 64-channel sections to permit simultaneous observations at the two frequencies) on the 25-m SERC radio telescope at Chilbolton, are reported. No H3C5N is detected in integration times 72, 41, and 16 h, respectively, and the upper limit (assuming an excitation temperature of 10 K) for TMC1 is given as H3C5N column density = 4.3 x 10 to the 12th/sq cm from the 9(09)-8(08) transition and 6 x 10 to the 12th/sq cm from the degenerate pair. These findings are discussed as evidence for a bias favoring the production of highly unsaturated species in the interstellar medium.
