The LOFAR project is entering the detailed design phase, with operations expected to commence in the 2006-2008 timeframe. The instrument features several innovations that are likely to be of great relevance to future radio astronomy arrays. These innovations include novel approaches to calibration and imaging, new data handling architectures, and an approach to the overall array architecture that maximizes flexibility and upgrade potential. The scientific outlook for LOFAR is bright, and features a wide range of topics. This promise arises from high sensitivity, combined with a wide range of observing frequencies, and imaging capabilities over a wide range of spatial scales.
