An overview of the calibration approach for LOFAR is presented. Due to
the station beam shape and the effect of the ionosphere, LOFAR
calibration is effectively a self-calibration for image-plane effects.
Calibration of the data for these effects is achieved in a Major Cycle
using both visibility data and image data.
