Scientific paper

4U 0042+32 is a very interesting and unusual high Galactic latitude X-ray transient. This source was detected in X-rays several times during the 1970s, and is probably a black hole X-ray transient, but has not been observed in outburst for over 20 years. Due to its high latitude, the level of extinction is low, but 4U 0042+32 has not been optically identified. We propose to use Chandra's sensitivity and positioning capabilities to localize 4U 0042+32 in quiescence to facilitate its optical identification. We have already obtained a deep optical image so that a Chandra detection is likely to lead to a rapid identification. Follow-up optical observations could then be performed to determine the source distance, the binary orbital parameters and possibly the mass of the compact object.
