LoCal Star is a computer program that is being developed in the IDL program language for the Magdalena Ridge Observatory Interferometer (MROI) as one part of its observational suite of tools. The objective of this program is to help astronomers who are using the MROI locate suitable calibrator star candidates for their targets, an often mundane task that can be time consuming. A quality calibration ensures that the data on the target is able to be reduced and modeled accurately, and ensures the likelihood of publishable observations. In order to help guarantee a quality calibration, LoCal Star will reference a calibrator star catalog that has been previously vetted to optimize MROI's coordinates and sensitivity. The astronomer will have the option to locate suitable calibrator star candidates in two ways; through a visual representation of the data and through an immediate return of a set number of calibrators with user specified parameters. The major advantages LoCal Star will have over similar existing programs are its use of a highly vetted and MROI specific calibrator catalog and its user-friendly, visual interface.
