Data from the Iakutsk network of stations are used to investigate local irregularities in the aurora-occurrence probability distribution connected with magnetic anomalies and the structure of the earth crust. The identified irregularities are explained by a fast-acting mechanism of pitch-angle scattering, 'switched on' at the development phase of magnetospheric substorms and characterizing the drop in plasma shedding from individual magnetic shells.
