The spectra of several planetary nebulae were studied from high dispersion plates, which show line splitting due to expansion. Measurements of the red/blue intensity ratios as a function of wavelength reveal the possible presence of internal extinction. The dust optical depths are usually a few tenths of a magnitude. Due to observational scatter, the ratios do not always yield conclusively the exact extinction law in the ionized hydrogen, but the results are not inconsistent with a lambda1 law. Theoretical calculations indicate that the results would be compatible with absorption by small graphite grains with dust/gas ratios of 1/100-1/1000. The data also show stratification effects, the possibilities for ionic depletion by dust are investigated as well as two possible mechanisms for the growth of larger than interstellar sized grains.
