We present Chandra constraints on the resolved LMXB populations in 23 early-type galaxies, which span 2 orders of magnitude in LX, and an order of magnitude in globular cluster specific frequency (SN). Correcting for biases due to source detection incompleteness and counting statistics, we construct LMXB X-ray luminosity functions (XLF) for each galaxy, confirming the remarkable uniformity in the XLF shape above a few times 1E37 erg/s. We find little evidence of hitherto reported breaks in the XLF. We find little evolution in the XLF shape with the age of the stellar population, although there is evidence of a weak anti-correlation, in conflict with simple models of long-term LMXB evolution.
Using archival HST data, we identify globular cluster (GC) candidates and correlate them with the XRB positions, to investigate how the properties of the host GC affect the LMXB population. We find that, although LMXBs form both in the field and in GCs, the XLF shape of the two populations must be similar, implying it is primarily determined by the intrinsic properties of LMXB rather than formation mechanism.
