The LISA Pathfinder mission is a dedicated technology demonstrator for LISA. LISA, a joint ESA/NASA mission, is designed to detect low frequency gravitational waves.
LISA Pathfinder simulates one arm of the LISA constellation by shrinking the 5 million kilometer armlength down to a few tens of centimeters. LISA Pathfinder will fly the LISA gravitational reference mass and disturbance reduction system that keeps the mass flying drag-free as well as test the LISA short-arm interferometry system that measures relative motion between the reference mass and the local optical bench.
The data from LISA Pathfinder will be used in part to prove that the spacecraft systems perform as designed and demonstrate the required performance, and in part to extract information to fulfil the science objectives of the mission. A set of analysis tools and techniques have been developed to accomplish these goals.
