Relationship between solar activity and global and regional climate was analysed over a long (up to millennium and longer) time scale using both direct and proxy data. Modern annual temperature proxies, based on tree-ring widths, were used in analysis. These records cover time intervals up to a millennium and longer. he data on cosmogenic isotopes (14C, 10Be) and historic chronicles (sunspots observed by naked eye, auroral observations) were used as a source of information on solar activity during last few millennia. Complex statistical analysis of all the variety of solar and climatic direct and indirect data was performed. It was found that a common centennial rhythm is present in temperature records for the Northern Hemisphere at least during the last 1000 years. The rhythm consists of wo cycles - 50-80 yr and 100-130 yr variations and more likely is resulted from the modulation of climate by a century-type variation of solar activity (Gleissberg cycle). The results obtained show that a probable cause to the connection between solar activity and climate may be the intensity of galactic cosmic ray (GCR), hich is driven by activity of the Sun. This research was done in the frame of an exchange between the Russian and Finnish Academies (project N16) and was supported by the program "Astronomy: nonstationary processes
