The first detection of molecular hydrogen in the sun is reported. The observations were made with the aid of a high resolution telescope and spectrograph flown in a rocket on July 21, 1975. A short stretch of a spectrum obtained with a 51-sec exposure time is presented in a graph. It has been found that at least 30 of the new lines are related to known transitions in the Lyman bands of H2. The H2 molecules in the sunspot, or pore, can be excited by photons in the red wing of H L-alpha as they travel down towards the photosphere.
