Earth Magnetosphere: Alfven Waves

Scientific paper

The authors consider the linear interaction of oblique Alfve'n and rapid magnetosound waves with the particles of the magnetospheric plasma. They obtain the refractive index for a sufficiently broad frequency region and propagation angles. They calculate the Cherenkov decrements of wave damping on cold and hot plasma components and analyze the instability on the ion-cyclotron resonances. They determine the instability region for both types of waves as a function of the parameters of the hot plasma of the magnetosphere ring current, frequency, and propagation angle.
