High-resolution polarization observations of the large radio galaxy 3C 31 have been made at 1.4 and 2.7 GHz. The straight and resolved sections of both radio jets are found to contain well-ordered magnetic fields aligned perpendicular to the jet axes and thermal electron densities of the order of 10,000 per cu m. The perpendicular field and the distribution of emission across the jets imply that the predominant radio emission is not coming from the interfaces between the jets and some external medium, as might be expected if the jets are confined by such a medium. However, a simple model of a 'free' jet (one not confined in this way) is also ruled out since the brightness of each jet decreases only slowly with distance from the central galaxy. Reacceleration of relativistic electrons is therefore probably occurring along each jet; this could perhaps be caused by shock fronts within the jets.
